Styphnolobium japonicumNative of China and Korea, introduced to Japan and often planted around Buddhist temples for its showy flowers. This is a 40-65' shade tree that is quite tolerant of tough urban conditions would be beautiful as a specimen tree for the home landscape. Also known as Chinese Scholar Tree.

Features creamy-white fragrant flowers, borne in 6- to 12-inch pendulous panicles, that adorn the tree in late Summer. The twisted fruits, which resemble pea pods, are also unique: they start out green, turn to yellow and finally age to brown. Glossy olive-green branches and twigs add winter interest. This tree prefers well-drained soils and is tolerant of challenging urban conditions.
